Safety

It is perfectly alright for a novice to experiment with essential oils on his or her own, but it takes some education and training to know how to best apply them and what amounts are safest in any given circumstance.

  • When handling essential oils, it's important to be aware that some essential oils have shorter shelf-lives than others.  If stored for too long, these essential oils can oxidize and become ineffective or potentially harmful.  Refrigeration of all essential oils and carrier oils will prolong their shelf-lives and keep them fresher longer.  Keep caps tightly sealed to avoid air exposure.  Keep essential oils away from heat and direct sunlight.

  • Some essential oils may not be suitable for infants, the elderly, pregnant women, or pets or should be applied on them in highly diluted applications.  To be on the safer side, opt instead for hydrosols.  Hydrosols are aromatic waters produced via the essential oil distillation process.

  • Some essential oils should not be applied before sun exposure.  For example, certain citrus oils can become phototoxic if applied before time spent out in the sun.  No need to worry about this when using Twelve Spells aromatherapy potions. The essential oils we use are either non-phototoxic to begin with or diluted enough that no harm can be caused to you while out in the sun.

  • Some essential oils are known skin irritants, and it is best to dilute them before contact with skin.  1 or 2 drops of skin-friendly essential oils may be applied undiluted to the skin, but even that can be problematic for some people.  A patch test can help you see how your skin reacts, but dilution is usually the safest way to go.  A certified aromatherapist can advise you further on what is best.  Essential oils are extremely potent, requiring very little application to be effective.  With essential oils, a little goes a very long way!
A pure essential oil is about 70% more concentrated than the whole plant 🪴🌳 itself!  Therefore, it is always best to dilute an essential oil in a carrier oil before skin application.

    • Just one small 15 ml bottle of essential oil contains:

      • 10,000 Roses

      • 5 pounds of Peppermint leaves

      • 75 Lemons

      • 5 pounds of Lavender flowers

  • It is advised not to ingest essential oils by mouth.  If you want to eat essential oils, it is best to first seek approval or advice from a licensed physician or experienced aromatherapist.  Essential oils are highly concentrated plant substances that can potentially harm the intestinal tract without proper dilution.

  • Essential oils should never come in contact with eyes or mucous membranes.
